Greetings
I am finishing a large rectangular mirror (48″x36″). I usually use countersunk eyehooks on the verticals with steel wire to hang them, but this one is heavier (60+ pounds) than usual, and I want it stable. What’s the right way to support a frame like this? Client does not want to put cleats on wall, so that’s not an option.
Any thoughts welcome.

ANy chance of using two keyhole slots in the frame and two screws in the wall?
Use a french cleat. A search will show you pics. It's a horizontal board attached to the wall with a bevel cut on the top edge. Attached to the mirror top frame is a mating board cut with another bevel on it's edge that matches the bevel on attached to the wall board.
You can also buy similar metal cleats. These are attached elft and right.
Attach hooks at the bottom also and run the wire from the bottom through the sides and back down to the bottom.

I've done heavy mirrors (not 60#, but heavy) with keyhole slots. The only hassle with them is getting the mirror to hang straight. Your measurements have to be dead nuts. - lol
I use D rings attached to the back of the frame, two HD picture hooks on the wall, hitting studs, and heavy steel cable. Twin hooks give you adjustability for alignment and back up if one should fail but they seldom do.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
I might do like the picture in post # 4 except I would place two hangers on the top rail and the other two lower on the stiles to disperse the load .

Thanks everyone. I got some good ideas to run by the client.

If I understand what you said, I think using the sides and top rail will leave all the weight of the frame/mirror on the bottom rail. The way I did it uses the bottom rail to hold up all the weight.

ASK ,
I would use a piece of say 1/4" plywood behind the frame , once it is fastened to the entire frame the weight transfer will be spread out over the whole frame . The bottom rail will not have all the load.
Usually on a large frame like yours the material is not dainty so if you leave a recess or just keep the back away from the edges it will be hidden.
Most old pieces of furniture with mirror frames did use some kind of a back , often to protect the Silver backing on the mirror also I have to believe the back was to add strength to the frame .
If you use a back and fasten to the whole frame you may be able to only use two side hanging hooks to do the job as the wt will be spread .

One of the nice things about everything is that there is usually more than one way to skin a cat.
Next time maybe I'll try it your way.
