I promised my daughter a hope chest for her birthday and let her pick a design for a book called Treasure Chests. The one she has her heart on is one with heart shaped dovetails (also known as Lovetails). I have experimented on scraps of material, but am still hesitant to start. Is there anybody out there that has cut these? Is there any complete instructions as to how I would approach this?

FWW had an article on this in Issue 83 (Jul/Aug 1990), by Jacques Berger. It has been reprinted in one of Taunton's Best of Fine Woodworking series of books.
Wood,
Don't know about lovetails, but would recommend against love handles for lifting the lid;-))

wb,
use a forstner bit to cut the pin sockets first, then raw lines at a tangent to the hole, cut and pare back to the adge of the hole.
use a fine scalpel to transfer the profile from the pin sockets to the endgrain of the other board, cut these as normal, and finish up paring out the 'v' at the top of the heart.
they're not difficult but fiddly.
If I get a chance, I'll cut you a sample one at work tomorrow - usually takes about 5 min per pin.
Cheers,
eddie
Thanks Eddie for the reply. I guess the most critical part is getting all the pins marked exactly. I figure the sides will be 20 inches high, so a lovetail 1" in from the top and bottom and every 4.5" in between, making a total of 5 on each side. I have cut a few practice lovetails in 3/4" material (of which I am using).
Doing a single one is no problem, but cutting 3 on a board is definitely a challenge to get the pins to fit/line-up with the pin sockets and keeping everything square.
You are right though; it is a lot of finicky work and time consuming, as it is mostly handwork. But the results are definitely worth it.

Try this link: http://us.oak-park.com/catalogue.html?list=RTS-LDS-
It is Oak Park (Router workshop) people. They make router patterns for heart-shaped dovetails.
If the link fails, go to http://www.oak-park.com and look for router patterns. The site is a bit confusing but they have lots of router goodied.

Woodbutcher, a couple of weeks ago I seen "heart dovetail" templates at the Wood Working show in Indy. The company was Woodline USA and the product was called Route-R-Joint Percision Dovetail Joinery System Here is a link to their website, if you scroll to the bottom you can see the dovetails. Kind of expense though.
