Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about buying Hardwood in the atlanta area? I live just west of there and isnt much too choose from. There is Peach State lumber up in Kennesaw , but cant get an email answer. Got a reply from Atlanta Hardwood for Maple 8/4 about 6$ and Walnut about 7.50$. does this sound like a good deal? there is a sawyer up in Gainsville but thats a little far, but might be good if prices are worth it. just would like the experts opinion. Thanks to all, love this place, have learned quite a bit.

I've used Peach State and they have a large selection of species.. Atlanta Hardwood is out of my price range. I have been purchasing at Suwanee Lumber Co. in beautiful, downtown Suwanee, Ga. since 1978. Probably have the best prices in Atlanta, IMO.
Contact the gentleman in Gainesville at the mill.. as it might be worth it to make the drive. I live in Lawrenceville which is NE side of town and Gainesville is about 25 miles away in the next county over. I might have a look at his wood soon.. as several have mentioned him.
I get some stock from a private mill up in Elijay which is in the foot-hills of the Blue Ridge Mtns. But.. he runs when he runs and will call me when he does. Not a large supplier, mostly for freinds and a few locals.
Good luck...

ok, thanks. I havent been to suwanee in quite a while, i live in Douglasville west of Atlanta. I am in the middle of building a kayak and plan to go up to the mts to try it out and will probably talk to the guy in gainsville along the way. thanks again,

Oh yeah.... on Atlanta Hard-woods....... yeah indeedy! Peach State has more really exoctic species than Suwanee.. but if you are using the standard hard-woods you"ll find that Suwanee is cheaper than Peach State. I realize that at the price of gas now.. Peach State would be closer to you down your way. My BIL who is a shop foreman at Delta lives down in Temple and that is about a 65 mile haul from my home in L'ville.
Holler at me if you find out anything good about the source in Gainesville if you would be so kiind, Frank. Not a bad idea to look at various sources as sometimes a truck load of exceptional might show up anywhere.. any time. As I stated, the price of gas makes comparative shopping for price and grain a little more difficult than it was when you just got in your vehicle for a ride to see. :>)

Maintence of ground support vehicles which I believe specializes mainly with hydraulics or something similar? Not quite sure of official Delta sanctioned title as per Delta's definition. Brian Ardrey is the name and he has been there for awhile. He was once a BMW mechanic at Chris Motors and still does it on the side for former clients.
If you happen to see him.. just tell him JT said to cut the jaw jacking and get to work or I'll pack his Yankee *ss up and send him back to Pittsburg. But.. his sister stays as she's definitely a "keeper"! ha.. ha... ha..ha..ha..

He's been there over 10 years I am almost certain. He was involved in a lay-off before that from the same shop I believe.. but was called back not to long after and it's been at least 10 years and probably longer since. I'm getting old and kind of lose track of time.
I'm heading for the shop.. let me know if you do make contacts up in G'ville as we mentioned.

sure thing, probably next month when the kayak takes its maiden voyage...

got an email from CAG lumber in gainsville. wanted 6$ BF for the walnut... which was slightly higher the Peach. i thought it might be a little cheaper but looks like Peach is still the best buy...
Frank

I was just getting ready to head down to the shop. I agree that $6 is too high unless it were just exceptionally grained stock.. which I have no reason to believe it was if he didn't mention it.
Good luck...

Peach was 5.85 which is the best price i found so far... AT Hw was around 7.50
do you know of anyone cheaper?

At one point Frank, I would not have even considered shopping the locals as Suwanee was cheaper and 13 miles away. Ten minutes to get there with traffic lights. P State is a 75 mile round trip and would add an additional $10 for gas at current prices.
And... about 4 month ago (?) Suwanee quit printing a price sheet that came out each month. I asked Lisa there about it and she explained that they get truck-loads in 3-4 times a week. With the price of gas jumping the transportation cost are unknown until arrival. They quit printing a set price schedule monthly as it has become a day to day affair with prices from suppliers and transportation charges.
So.. perhaps the best approach at this point for we locals is to get into a three point stance ready to roll. Then call around for that days prices.. factor gas price for mileage traveled.. make a choice and pedal to the metal... and let fresh lumber hang out the rear of the tail-gate on the way home from a rapidly changing market-place! :>)

just a idea, last time we had a himacane I took my chainsaw an went around and cut up some of the oak and walnut trees that were down , got paid to remove them and went to a sawmill an had them cut up. put them up in the barn and ended up with close to 2800 bf of lumber
I just finished a chess of D's from downed red oak I got in the same scenario. I have gotten oak.. maple.. pecan and sweet-gum that way. I wish I had run across walnut.. but you don't see it much anymore in the out-lying Atlanta counties that were once abundant. About all you see is house where trees used to stand unfortunately.

hope to have a good himacane season this year , wood pile is starting to get low also try looking around new construction sites you would be surprised at what is thrown out . at one site I found 9 chisles, sharpened them up and sold them at a yard sale for 5.00 apiece
I have a cousin who developed land for sub-divisions until he retired two years ago at 79. He had a tract my grand-father owned as a farm about 90 years or so ago. My grand-father had planted a pecan orchard for harvesting latter.
When those trees came down to build on... he took it to the saw-mill and had it sliced. Air dryed it for several years in a barn on property he owned and brought it to me in portions.. I would surface about 1000 linear feet at a time and he gave me 1/3 for doing so... All has been used or sold now and there is liitle land left in timber as there was.
Progress they say....

here is a nother idea for getting free wood, I stop in at some of the places that install hardwood flooring and ask (nicely) if they have any scraps pieces left over from jobs that they are going to get rid of . first two places said no, the third place took me out back and said if I took it all I could have it a pick up truck later and some glue I had some nice lumber to play with just think outside the box
Cabinet shops throw aways are another option. I have no choice but to "think outside the box" as I haven't quite figured out to get in the box... yet. :>)
Sarge..
that might be an idea, though i really dont have a trailer to carry anything that big... but there are a lot downed trees over here after last weeks storm...mostly pines it looks like.. probably some oak as well...FrankWe were the winners, cause we didnt know we could fail....

I don't know much about anything, but I stopped by "Clifton's Rare Woods and Veneers" when I was in Atlanta a few years ago. Impressive stuff, but might be expensive. I have no frame of reference for that, I was just looking around.

Here's a website: http://www.rarewoodsandveneers.com/
It looks fancy, but they may carry a few staples as well. I really can't remember, but they were friendly and can find whatever you are looking for.
