A couple weeks ago, I dropped my dial caliper. That sucker is just like my chisels, There is no way it will land on the handle. The caliper landed with the dial face cover hitting the concrete floor and shattering. It shattered in a way that I could not salvage the very fine point of the dial.
I ordered another from one of my favorite companies, Lee Valley. Being from Mississippi, the only thing metric that I truly understand is the metric calander so I ordered the imperial caliper and a few other items. I received a metric caliper. I sent them an email , gave them my order number and informed them that the caliper I received was metric. I got a nice reply with their apologies and was told they were sending me an imperial caliper along with a package in which to return and the required postage. I receiver another metric caliper. I then called them and talked with Customer Service. The CRS told me the she would have them send it up to her so that she could check to see if it was correct. Today, I got another metric dial caliper that they sent by overnight air. I now have three metric cial calipers.
Guess what? Lee Valley is still one of my favorite companies. They have been courteous and prompt, but the employees are making it difficult for their fine owner to make it in this market.

Try requesting a metric one.
LOL!
Why not just get one of these. http://wixey.com/calipers/index.html
This will give you Decimal, Fractions, or Metric readings.
Hi Cool ,
Hey , if you can't beat them join them , learn the Metric system .

Dusty, think about that which you say. It took me pertneer a year to learn th metric calander.
I'll betcha Mr. Lee will see your post. Toooooo funny!! Quite uncommon, methinks, for them to mess something like this up. I've had extremely good experiences with Lee Vally customer service.

FG, he appearantly did see the post. The email reply from The CSR this morning referred to him and what he would do to see what caused this problem.
All in all, this could be viewed as positive for Lee Valley. Things like this can happen. Perhaps one could criticize the CSR who said she would have the ship package sent to her desk to make sure they had it right and failed to open th box to look at the dial.
I sent the last notice to LV last night around 10:00 pm and had a reply by 8:30 this morning. Their service really is exceptional and still a favorite.

Now all you need is three Canadian friends. Get them, and you have Christmas presents all ready to go!
This optically challenged Canadian would trade it in for an imperial. They foisted metric on us decades ago by telling us the US was going to go the same way.

Okay, so we need French friends, then.
I do the purchasing in our shop and typically buy most of my measuring equipment from places like http://www.use-enco.com or http://www.wttool.com 6" dial calipers are around $10-12. wtool was selling a 12" caliper last year for $20. I also keep a few digital calipers on hand as well. I would never buy calipers from LV or Woodcraft. More expensive and less choices.
Perhaps if you did they would send you a metric calendar!
Is that ten months and a hundred weeks?
I wanted to replace a misplaced caliper and was wondering. all these prices are reasonalble for this tool,so what does starrett do that no others do!?? their prices are amzaing&$$$$! is ther ethat much accuracy missing in the others??or are they in the festool league of woodworking.
Some things Sterrett are worth the price. Their combination square is one, but I just couldn't see the Dial caliper as one. The caliper I broke was a quality tool. The dial needle and the markings were very fine and did not cost anything like (at today's dollars) what Sterrett wants for theirs. It was as good as a decent eye would let it be.
I had a very similar experience with the good folks at Woodcraft. I had ordered a set of chisels from 1/8" - 1-1/2". When they arrived, I had an extra 1-1/4" chisel and was short a 1-1/2" chisel. So I wrote them a letter and they said that they would send me another. A week later, I got a package in the mail. I eagerly opened it up only to find... a 1-1/4" chisel. So again I wrote to Woodcraft and they had one of their "experts" ensure that I got a 1-1/2" chisel. So they sent it out and it was correct. We figured that the stock was mixed up.
