Can anyone recommend a good book on building chairs? Specifically dining room chairs?
Here’s my situation. Some years ago my wife and I bought four dining room chairs (very Cheap) to go with (definitely not match) a very cheap table. The table is long gone, but the chairs are still with us and going strong.
The trouble is we have need for more than four chairs. We like the chairs we have alot, and haven’t found anything we like as well or better. So the plan is to start building copies in about a year (I’m stationed in Germany and don’t have easy access to a workshop).
So I’d like to study up on chair making for the next few months until I get back to my tools and can set up shop.
Thanks in advance for all your help.

This is just an idea I'm throwing out as I have not tried it, but if you like the chairs that you have then why can't you just take one of them apart and use it as a pattern and make more juts like them?

Well, duh. I hate it when someone comes up with a practical solution.
Actually...it wasn't my idea. ;^) I stole it from John Lucas at woodshopdemos.com

Following the path of least resistance makes rivers and men crooked.
ditto the comment on Jeff Miller's book - a lot of information on chair making concepts and several examples. I found the information invaluable when making our kitchen chairs.
Good luck

I also like Miller's book alot- but I also found a Time-Life book that is a bit more "how to" that is very useful as well. It was a fairly inexpensive book with a spiral binding- can't recall the exact name though (It is out in the shop now (I am in the middle of a set of 10 dining room chairs).) The front has a series of articles from "famous" chairmakers and the subsequent chapters is a how to for several basic chair designs- easily adapatble to your own design.
