I am making several cutting boards like that featured in last June/July FWW…I want to have a dark strip be 3/16″ wide. I am planning on using 3 1/16 strips. I have tried Wenge but it would not hold the glue. I was using Titebond III.
If I can’t get Wenge to glue, what about using Minwax ebony stain on either maple or poplar and glue those up…would the glue hold? I know I will try it but wondered if anyone had any experience?
thank you

In general, oil based pigment stain will not provide a secure gluing surface. The stain contains a small amount of resin to adhere the pigment to the wood. This resin will also seal the surface preventing the absorption of the glue. You can glue surfaces that have a dye stain.
Painting os stained wood surface block the pores. Minwax is an oil based stain which does not show the desired result. Instead you can try gel stain which stays longer on the wood. But it is a bit time consuming.
