I have a 15 year old Jet 15″ planer (JWP-15HO). The original service manual says to change the gear oil with “50 weight” gear oil. I can’t find anything like that and do not want to use the heavier wieght gear oil one finds in auto parts stoes (such as 80-90 weight automotive gear oil). What is 50 weight gear oil – is their an automotive oil that can be safely used? Also, is this the same oil that one adds to the 4 individual oil holes on top of the machine (individual plugs that screw out with a hex driver and have a heavy spring residing inside the hole beneath the screw out plug)?
thanks – mezkdz

Second question first, if the hex screws don't have oil holes in them, and there isn't anything in the machine's manual that says you need to put oil in those holes, then you probably don't need to worry about them. If they are supposed to get oiled, then they probably just need a light machine oil, SAE 20 or 30 weight or even ordinary 3 in 1 oil. But again the manual or a phone call to Jet is the best authority.
Most non automotive gear oils are now designated by an ISO grading number, the equivalent to an SAE 50 weight oil is ISO 220 weight. MSC, a large machine and industrial supply house that ships UPS, has a gallon of ISO 220 gear oil for about $11.00. Their part number for the oil is 06628283. You can reach them at mscdirect.com or 1-800-645-7270.
You can probably also get the proper oil from Jet, but you'll probably pay $11.00 for a quart rather than a gallon.
Hope this helps, John White
thanks for the quick response - the plugs do have an oil hole so I'll take care of that part and follow-up on the gear oil per your suggestion.
