Hello,
Can anyone help me understand the finishing technique used on the leg in the attached photo? I am in the process of finishing an old barn table and would like to recreate the coloring effect. As a newcomer, the only way I know how to describe the effect is ‘shadowing’ with varying degrees of color showing through and a gloss finish?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I would appreciate any help with this... thanks!
I am also new to woodworking so take this advice with a grain of salt.It looks to me as though you could replicate this look by the following:this wood appears to be maple or even gum (often used in commercially-made furniture)dye your leg black
then sand off, to varying degrees, the black where you want it to be highlighted
then use an orange or garnet shellac, or a combination of the two, on the leg to give it that golden brown hueso ends my suggestion, let me know what you find
Hi Brian,
Sorry for the delayed response. Sounds like Peter Gedrys gave you a good response here: http://forums.taunton.com/fw-experts/messages?msg=2485.1
