I’m helping a friend who built his kitchen cabinets in cherry. Cherry ply for cases and solid for face frames. I’m building the doors and drawers out of cherry. He didn’t know cherry darkens with age. I showed him a sample and he likes the aged color. What kind of finish do you recommend? About how long will it take for the wood to get darker?

I'm sorry I missed your question.
Concerning the cabinets;
Cherry will deepen depending on how much light it is exposed to. It is a gradual process.
The optimum choice for a kitchen cabinet is a sprayed lacquer. If you don't have the capacity to do it, you can check local finishing shops to get some prices.
If you are going to do it yourself, a good varnish like Behlen rockhard would fit the bill.
If you are planning on doing the finish yourself, take some time to plan a schedule for application and drying times. Then you can balance out what your time is worth vs. paying to have it done.
