I recently acquired several dressers, an old sewing machine and several commodes. I know that I shouldn’t strip the old finish, but what is the best refurbishing technique to bring this all back to life. These were all pieces that were my wifes grandmothers’ and great grandparents.

strip + refinish by a pro would make the pieces beautiful for another 100 years. Otherwise a light cleaning and paste wax will brighten up the surface unitil you decide what's best and in your budget

What you do depends heavily on exactly what kind of pieces these are. What kind of wood are they? What style? Are these clearly handmade items, or were they made in a factory? Pictures would help.
Early pieces, before 1830 or so, have particularly stringent requirements for restoration, which if "violated" can dramatically reduce value.
