1. Coat the ground contact surfaces with epoxy. Wash down every spring.
2. Coat the ground contact surfaces with epoxy. Use a light colored gloss exterior enamel exterior of the best quality you can find.
Thanks for the advice, I was wondering about the legs resting on the ground.
Steve is right about the legs. White Oak is very durable outdoors, because ot the little cork-like plugs that grow in its pores and keep moisture from flowing freely. Nevertheless, you'll be much better off sealing the ends.
If you are planning on painting it, Steve is right on the money. If you plan on a clear finish don't get suckered by the hdw. store spar varnish. Go to a marine supply store and get the best they carry. I like Epifanes, but I am sure there are others of good quality. If you are not close to a marine supply check out http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/main.do They have the epoxy you will need for the bottom of the feet as well.
I've used One Time Wood on white oak. Comes in clear, brown and redwood.
