Hi everyone,
It’s been awhile since I posted over here. No time I guess with a now two year old in the house! But, I’ve managed to get in some work on a jewlery box and I have a question before I get too far in the finishing process. When I veneered the top I used the PVA glue and iron technique which has worked very well for me in the past. This time though, I think there was a space in the veneer where the glue steamed out nearly entirely, or I didn’t get even coverage of the glue in that area. Though the veneer is stable and glued well, there is a little dimple about the size of a narrow pinky finger print where the veneer is down maybe 1-2 mm or so from the rest of the flat surface. I’ve sealed with a couple of coats of shellac and have got two coats of lacquer on. At this point the depression is not that noticeable unless viewed under just the right backlighting. I’m planning on a high gloss finish after 4 or 5 more coats of lacquer and rub-out. Here are the questions:
1) Would doping in lacquer work to raise the level? That seems like a lot of lacquer puddling there.
2) Shellac burn in stick? I’m going for a very clear finish, I used Ultra Pale shellac, is there a stick out there that’s compatible? Would it work over the lacquer?
I might just decide in the end that I don’t mind the depression that much anyways, but it’d be nice to know how to fix it if I wanted to. This seems like a tough one, since there’s not a defined edge to the defect (not like a gouge) and it just kind of blends into the areas around it. Well, thanks everybody, and have a great Thanksgiving! Erich

I would consider adding finish and carefully using a scraper to level the finish until you achieve a flat surface. Basically the scraper removes the surrounding "high spots" while not hitting in the "low" areas. That way you don't build an excessive thickness of finish everywhere until the low spot flow out level. Of course you need a few coats of finish first so that with CAREFUL scraping you don't go through the surrounding finish.
Good luck!
