I have a table ready for finishing for my son’s recent move out into an apartment. I have used Minwax combination stain and finish follwed by a polyurethane top copcoat. For this table the requested color was black. I tried Minwax’s 2718 finish but was disappointed, it darkened but didn’t go truly black or ebony. My finishing skills are limited as is my work area, so I lean towards the wipe on finishes. Any suggestions for both dye/stain and the top coat for a kitchen/dining table?
Thanks-Bill

Bill,
I've done a lot of ebonizing, and I always use aniline dye. Try Lockwood's water soluble ebony black. I have sometimes dyed red first, then black, to warm up the black. You can also mix a dark brown together with the black to a similar effect. I just finished an ebonized ash kitchen, myself, with Target water based lacquer as a topcoat, sprayed. But polyurethane should work well. Thin the first coat a little and brush it out quickly.
Good luck!
