Dust Control: Huge Paradigm Shift
I’ve known for a while that I need to upgrade my dust collection system. My little 1 hp unit can get most of the chips from the jointer, and it keeps the cabinet of the table saw from completely overflowing, but that’s about the extent of it’s abililities. I’ve been figuring that a 2 hp bag type unit would be a good upgrade, but wanted to do a little research first.
When I found this website, http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/Index.cfm, I gained a whole new understanding of the subject. It turns out, there is so much misinformation out there that most of us have no idea what “good” dust control is. In fact, according to Bill, the conventional wisdom (i.e., 4″ pipe, 350-500 cfm at the machine, etc.) is woefully inadequate.
Anyway, read for yourselves. I just thought I’d bring this to everyone’s attention. For me, it has been very interesting and eye openning. I guess I’ll be spending a bit more on my new system, but I know it will be worth the money.
Hope this helps.

My main dust collector is a 2 hp, 1350 cfm from Delta. I wished I never bought it. It probably gets 75 % of the dust and chips out, and I use blast gates and everything. Once a week, I have to get into the base of my cabinet saw, and push the dust to the opening. In the spring, I'm going to build a small attachment outside for a cyclone, and have Oneida design me an effecient system. Thanks for the post, I'll be reading the attachment with interest.

That is a good website. Also when you're ready for a cyclone buy one from him or make one based on his designs. If you're not in the mood for making your own I'd reccommend Oneida. They have a great customer service department and will help you size out a system for you.
