I purchased a steel City dust collector a few months ago. It has a felt bag (supposed to filter down to 1 micron). Some articles I read suggested a canister would be better as you can turn the crank on top occasionally to clean the film of dust on the inside. But it occurs to me that I can shake the bag occasionally and serve the same purpose. When I shake the bag a lot of dust falls into the clear plastic bag below. Am I right about this or is there something I am missing. Can I just go on shaking the bag like that or should I take it off and clean it more thoroughly every once in a while? Any advice?

Shaking is fine. In fact, a layer of dust "cake" forming on the inside helps to filter.
The pleated filter media of the canister provides a much greater surface area than the felt bag, allowing better airflow. That would be the primary reason to change.
