I’m getting ready to buy a dust collector to collect shavings from my 8″ Jointer and 15″ planer. I never use both at once, so I only need enough suction to operate one machine at a time. I use a shop vac for other tools, so the planer and jointer are the only tools that the dust collector will need to support. I’m considering either the Delta 50-850A (http://www.deltamachinery.com/index.asp?e=136&p=4954) dust collector with canister filter, or a cyclone like Oneida’s Dust Gorilla. When I use the planer, it’s usually to surface wide panels and it generates incredible amounts of shavings, so I’d like to have something that has lots of capacity, and/or is easily emptied. I dump my shavings in the woods, so the ability to capture them in plastic bags is of minimal value to me. I would sure appreciate opinions from others who have been through this decision making process. Thanks.

Go with a cyclone. Less filter cleaning more woodworking. In the long run you will want to make duct runs to other tools, with the cyclone you'll be set.

For a TS or BS, a cartridge system is fine. But a planer and jointer creates a ton of shavings. I would recommend the cyclone. I have the 3 hp Delta cyclone and it has worked better than I would have imagined.
I catch the debris in two 55 gal drums (one for shavings, one for the fine dust) which are mounted on the Delta drum dollies so I can roll them out of the DC room to the outside of the shop.
I have one similar DC design to what you are looking at but a different brand. Mine is a Seco KUFO-101. It is tiwanese (pardon the sp) and I bought it eons ago. I started out with two bags, and found as it filled up the things power went down hill fast. Still, I only had a minimal distance so no big deal. I just cleaned it at about 50%. I recently upgraded the cloth bags to the canister and plastic bag. What a difference. I use mine for everything TS,BS,Planer, Jointer, router, drum sander. You name it, it has done a fine job on it all. I have noticed a huge improvement in air quality since the upgrade. My canister is 1 micron. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. It has a big impeller, that takes the occasional big chips, and I hear a loud bang, but it works till full. I like the clear plastic bag. If money is no problem go for the cyclone, but, I think the one you reference would do the job just fine. Mine is slightly bigger, but not much. Mine is a 2hp @ about 1200 cfm. Good luck on the choice.
