This seams like a pretty sharp crowd, so this is probably an easy question; puns are intended.
I have a one horsepower Harbor Freight dust collector (it is a single bagger-no top bag-bet you haven’t seen many of them!)and I have it set up with gates to service 8 machines. I am using plastic gates and 4 inch “clothes dryer” hose for connections. That’s that great looking hose that looks like it has a tin foil exterior.
It’s all installed and works well on a number of machines but not particularly well with the table, radial arm or band saw.
The skin of the hose is thin and appears to be loosing some of its metallic look. I was wondering how much more effective the system would be if it was hooked up with plastic pipe. I would only redo the piping if there would be a really noticeable difference. Any advise, suggestions or off-handed comments weather colorful, thoughtful or knee-jerk welcomed.

I think you would see signifcant improvement if you used rigid pipe, either pvc or steel with large radius elbows to each tool. Use flexible DUST COLLECTION HOSE for the final hook up if you need to. The flexible hose that you are using now has very high resistance to air flow and severely restricts air flow. If you use pvc pipe it should be grounded, (a copper wire wrapped around and around, or run down the inside of the pipe.) Not crucial but this will reduce static shocks
