I’m looking to buy a drum sander for my home shop. I have looked at the 18″ grizzley and the 18″ performax and also the new delta. Does anybody have an opinion about these amachines or any others that may be out there?

I recently purchased the Performax Plus 18/36 and I have run several hundred feet of 4" to 10" wide soft maple through it as I had to make a number of large drawers and I planed all the wood to .665" and then sanded it down to .625". I used 150 grit paper and took two passes per side and it did a fine job. The boards were very flat and within .003" from side to side. I don't think it would be fast enough for a production shop but for a one man shop with limited room I am pleased with the performance. The key is to take light passes. Changing paper is very easy.
Thanks mrbird and rtt. i've had an eye on the proformx for a while and when i checked with rockler the had it with a $100 rebate so i grabed one and found it to be an easy set up. i"ve been running some beech and am very happy with the results
Home shop or pro shop you don't need junk. I owned two Performax drumsanders and dumped both about seven years ago for a Woodmaster. Absolutly no comparison. The Performax are toys compaired to a Woodmaster. A friend of mine has the 16-32 and drives across town to use my Woodmaster.

Hey DJK
I am still looking for a good Drum Sander, not knowing that much about what I am looking I have been reading and listening to those who have more knowledge than I on this subject. Where did you find the Woodmaster and what are the prices. If you know of any other you would recommend let me know.
Thanks

cederworker, drum sanders are great for the cash challenged, patient, time is no object woodworkers. Widebelt machines are faster, perform better, cost a little more but are generally worth their keep. I have a 15hp 25" Sunhill that I paid $6k for and I wouldnt trade it for anything except a larger one. Make your choice. aloha, mike
