Try a brad point drill or a router if you can get the bit sizes you need
Use a brad point bit with a piece of scrap behind the work piece to eliminate tear out
I would use a Forsner bit - drilling from the good side and into a backer.
I am bit loopy at times, and for me, I would use my Bit & brace and use a scrap backer board. I can control the cutting speed and drill till the screw end starts coming out the back then turn it over and insert the pilot screw in its hole and drill thru from the other side and not get any tear out.
The brad-point drill plus backup worked well. Thanks to all. Shel
