One of the bedposts on my 100 year old maple bed is dried out to the bare wood in places. My m-n-l said that her attempts to oil it or restore the finish did not last. Is there a way to restore a lovely finish to match the rest of the bedposts? Sharon

Without seeing it's difficult to tell you the best solution. Since you already used oil - make sure you wipe off all the excess oil - let it dry 10 days (hopefully it is the type that will dry) than try a coat of shellac using a brush to a small worn area to see if it adds lost luster. 100 year old bed should be cared for correctly so don't go too far without testing a small section first. A picture would be great if you could post it here ?
