Disassembling glued mortise and tenon joints
I need to disassemble some mortise and tenon joints glued with Carpenters Glue (Aliphatic resin). Is there a solvent that will help? If so, will it be OK to use without discoloring walnut?
Appreciate any help. Thanks, Joel

Disassembling M&T joints
I have used a heat gun in the past. Apply heat slowly and do not scorch. It does not require great temperature to soften the AR glue.
In our shop we used an infrared heat lamp placed 6 or so inches from the joint. About 10-15 minutes should do it. This works just fine for opening slow set, two part epoxy joints also.

vinegar
I believe is the one to soften aliphatic glues
I use heat to hasten the dying time. if you are using heat then don't waste to much time trying to knock it apart

Ron,
Thank you for your recommendation of vinegar. A local wood working friend (furniture restorer) also suggested vinegar. I will give it a try and let you know the results. My chemist, brother, helpfully suggested that I dry fit before glueing next time. I did dry fit but got my up and down partially mixed up. C'est la gere.
I appreciate your time and counsel. Peace, Joel
just drill a tiny hole
into the joint and use a syringe to get the vinegar in there. give it time. then use a block of wood and a hammer. if you can drill in parallel to the tenon cheeks would be best.

re..vinigar
I have a friend in the string instrument repair busisness. Violins, cellos, etc. should only be glued up with natural hide glue, the solvent being water. Many times he would get an instrument in his shop repaired by the unknowing who used wood glue. White vinigar and heat usually work. Patience is the clue here.
