Howdy, folks. I just got a sweet Craftsman 12″ sliding compound miter saw. I’d like to be able to cut dados in 1x12s for making shelves, but it doesn’t look like I can fit the full dado blade set on the arbor…is there some adjustment or something else I can do to allow the dado to fit? I’m hoping I won’t have to end up chiselling these out by hand. Thanks.

You'd be far safer making a jig to cut these with a router. I doubt your chop saw will have a long enough arbour to handle anything other than a single blade.

Thanks, Mike. That's the problem exactly...the arbor isn't long enough to take a stacked blade, but it seems like the perfect use for a sliding saw...maybe I should have gotten a radial arm saw.

FWIW.. if you need to cut a large dado with an SCMS, the common method this side of the pond is to set the depth stop, then cut multiple kerfs through the piece staggered at say 1/4" O/C. The only important cuts are the first and last, the others are simply roughing out the bulk of the waste. The remaining "fins" can be pried out fairly simply with a chisel. The bottom of the trench can look like a dawg's breakfast but it doesn't take long to clean. Mike Wallace

Well, what do ya know...that worked rather nicely. Thanks.

chandler, DO NOT PUT A DADO BLADE ON A SLIDING MITER SAW!!!!! Unless you have good medical insurance. It would be suicide to do such a thing. These blades can only be used on table or radial arm saws.
