Hi all,
Just a quick note in the mode of …
“You just never know where lightning will strike”.
Here in Baltimore we have a really neat non-profit place called
The Loading Dock, they get used/dinged building materials, cabinets, sinks,
carpet, doors, windows etc. donated to them for a tax write off by various insundry companies and contractors and the like.
Then it’s sold with a smalll handling charge to low income people and landlords who provide low income housing (part of what I do).
Neat place to get some fairly basic materials at very low cost and reuses castoffs from industry that would otherwise be tossed in the dumpster.
So there I am looking at the lumber pile full of treated lumber, odd furring strips etc. and I spot this one stick with really, really nice grain.
I mean beautiful!
I haul it out of the pile ( all of this stored outside in a rack!) and then find more and more. 4/4, 5/4, even 8/4! some a bit waney but all gorgeous grain.
Turns out to be Curly Sycamore! How much a board do they want?
Two bucks a board.
That is what I call a Red Letter Day!

So you want to rub it in a little bit at a time, eh? How much did you get?
Uncle,
Uh well, er, like, yeah I guess I did want to rub it in a LITTLE BIT!
B.F.?
I would say it will work out to perhaps 50 b.f. give or take a few.
Like I said a Red Letter Day!
Tom ( completely not gloating or anything )
I can see the smirk all the way over here in the uk.Next time you go to the centre see if you can find about 4 cubic feet (48ftx12"x1") of American Black Walnut.,I have just had a quote from my timber merchant of ............Wait for it..........
FORTY-FIVE POUNDS (sterling)per cubic foot . so when you find some stick a label on it and send it over , with your purchasing skills I think if I put 10 dollars away for it that should cover purchase and postage.
good hunting
Tea-bag. ps.and he will want a delivery charge.
Hey Teabag-
Here in the Wash DC area one of my wood dealers had a walnut tree (with crotch) all cut up and leaning against a wall. I bought all 10 pieces for US $5.25 a board foot...and it can be had for less elsewhere. I'll be thinking about you while I'm making a Queen Ann period Secretary. At least you can probobly get some nice English brown oak cheaper then we can. Be safe. Jimmy.
I did go back to the place today and tore through another stack of crap lumber with 9" of snow on top. Found another 7 boards of curly syc.
But I am still not smirking at all. Nope! Not one little bit o' smirk.
Hey I had to work for that lumber! My tootsies got all chilly and stuff.
Tom
P.S.
Teabag,
That's interesting how they price work there. By the cubic foot?
So that would be 12 board feet I assume?
How does a pound sterling translate to a dollar these days?
Its only cubic foot if you're a silver surfer (or in my case a shiney surfer). OFFICIALLY its now sold as cubic metres thanks to the EC directive that changed all things British. A cubic metre is approx 35 cubic foot or 400 b.f.if we are both on the same wave-length. I have been working both metric and imperial for many years but I still have to think imperial when pricing,or being robbed.
the exchange rate is about 1.6 dollars to the pound.Don't all send me money orders to change if this is wrong.
Regards Tea-bag.
p.s.this should make a cubic metre of american black walnut about two thousand five hundred dollars.plus [email protected]%
With your 1.6 exchange rate that runs to about $6 a board foot which combares fairly favorably with Exhibitors rate of $5.25 bf.

Way to go! It would have ended up in the landfill if you hadn't rescued it. We have a Habitat for Humanity recycling center here (Re-Store) where I have been waiting for something good to show up. Other people have had good success at getting pallets from Home Depot ( hardboard and other stuff comes from South America, et al)
Stan and Uncle,
I felt good "saving it" from a pile of construction lumber, but!
Now the real test.
To use this beautiful wood well.
Have a good weekend,
Tom
