Hi All,
I’m building a computer desk and I’m in a bit of a tizzy about what kind of hinges to use for a cabinet door.
Basically, the cabinet is frame and panel with 1 1/4″ thick legs and the door is inset approx 1/4″ from the front of the legs, if that makes sense.
Can I get away with using basic butt hinges with this recess or do I need to think of something else ?
thanks
Simon

You can use butt hinges, but there are a couple of design issues:
1) If you recess the hinge as far back as the doors are, the doors can't open more than 90°.
2) If you keep the barrel of the hinge even with the front face of the frame (the normal way), then some of the hinge plate is going to be exposed.
One way to get around this: Rather than mount the stationary side of the hinge directly to the leg, add a vertical filler piece, maybe 1/2" wide, that's inset to the plane of the door, and mount the hinge to that. That will eliminate the two issues above, but will narrow the door opening a bit.
Offset knife hinges are designed specifically for this kind of use. They're a bit fussy to install, though.
