I have an oak dining table with a black stain from a brass object that was left on it. The table needs to be refinished, but I’d prefer not to sand the old finish off, just clean and re-finish.
Is there any way to remove that ugly black stain?

You don't really have a "brass stain". You have a water stain that is in the wood unfortunately and not just in the finish. it will have to be bleached out and then refinished. And DON"T sand the finish off in any case. You might be able to just refinish the top of whatever this is. Remove the finish with a stripper, bleach the spot with an oxalic acid treatment, and then reapply a finish.
Thank you
Thanks Gretchen, I'll give that a try. There was a little brass statue on the table, 92 year old father-in-law spilled something on the table & nobody noticed it for a while. Oops, ugly black stain when we moved the statue. Not sure what finish on the table, we've had it for about 30 years - should have waxed it more often :-)
