If you find out
Tell me. I would like to get a hunk large enough to make a boxwood spoke shave liike Sam Maloof used to use.
boxwood source
I don't know where you are located, but I get boxwood half logs (approx 2 feet long, log diameter 5-6") here:

in Rowley, Ma
Click on the "Info" link and you will see a picture of the logs.
Excellent
Yes , thanks Saville.
Alternative?
FWIW, Woodworker's Source is selling South American Guatambu as an alternative to boxwood. They only have 4/4, though.

Not sure what this is.
Perhaps a species of Boxwood. It grows all over my property, having trouble identifing it. Had a large one knocked down by a red oak 4 to maybe 6" diameter.
Can anyone positively identify?
Boxwood substitute
I think that Chinese Privet Hedge (which grows into a 30' tree if you let it, grows all over the Southern USA, and is considered a noxious species in some parts of the world), could be an acceptable substitute for Boxwood. Here's a chisel handle made of CPH alongside an English Boxwood spokeshave. Over time, CPH colors to more orange like the boxwood. It is hard and extremely dense. Luckily, I brought some with me when I moved to Montana - I use it for making tools.
You nailed it Ed
Thanks.
boxwood
Thanks! I'll give them a try.
