I recently finished some built-in cabinets and stained the birch ply/poplar trim combination with Minwax Wood Conditioner and Minwax stain, both oil based. I’ve dobe this before with pretty satisfactory results. However, this time the solid Poplar stained unevenly, even though I followed the same procedure as before.
My question is: Does anyone know of a good technique(short of starting over) to “tone down” darker areas of stain? Mostly its the open grain areas. I am open to all suggestions.
Thanks.

Toning it down may be exactly the right term. A gel stain, as a toner, may may "take" enough to even things out, though you will likely have to get a fair amount darker to get a more even effect. Experiment with scraps that are large enough to show the blotching before working on the actual pieces.
Steve, I was thinking along those lines as well. Thanks for the response.
