Went to visit with family in August and one of the side trips was to the Calaveras Big Trees state park. Here is a big stump of a tree cut down over a century ago. The mind-set then was “cut it down” so 4 men spent 22 days cutting it down. What a waste. The “log” is still laying there.
I have seen the redwoods many times but never get tired of walking through a grove. Every woodworker should do it at least once.

I have many times. Yes, I work with Exotic woods. I was still heart sick every time. Why would anybody cut down those trees! Or the other huge old trees. Wait till they fall on their own and then cut em' up!
OK, so you may have to wait a thousand years or so to get any of the boards from it.
I went to Sequoia this summer and was blown away by the size of those trees. What makes the cutting of them a shame, is they would shatter when they fell, rendering the wood unusable. 2,000 years of surviving fires, lightening, storms, but not a jerk with an axe wanting to build a dance floor in the woods.
but not a jerk with an axe wanting to build a dance floor in the woods.I can live with that! My wife loved to dance! I could not how hard I tried.. One medium sized Redwood for her dance floor! There is always some smart person with a response! :>)

Apparently it pissed off Teddy Roosevelt.. He created the National Parks Service so those trees would be protected...
That cut surface looks pretty flat. Did they hire someone to plane the whole thing smooth? How would one even take down a tree that big? Forget a 72" chainsaw bar. How about a 72' bar?

You can see how they did it on the bottom of the log. They drilled holes with a hand auger. Then apparently it took 4 days for the tree to finally fall in a gust of wind.
The stump had a gazebo built on top. The log had a bowling alley. Lots of history at this site.
