Hi Folks, Going to be building an outfeed table for my Powermatic pretty soon and my only real concern is cutting the slots for the T-bar type miter gauge.
Should I cut the dado/groove (it will be in phenolic ply) with a 3/4″ straight bit and then use a slot cutting bit for the T-bar? Or a smaller straight bit and just come back and widen it with another pass which is the general idea with a jig I would like to use.
I would like to construct a jig I read about that you adjust two fences on either side of the dado to fit, for example, the thickness of a bookcase shelf by placing the shelf in the jig and adjusting the fences to that particular thickness. In my case I will place the miter gauge bar in the jig to set the width of the dado and come back and cut the t-slot using the same jig. Does all that make sense?
Anyway, any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Obviously I want the gauge to ride smoothly from the table saw to the outfeed table.
Thanks for your help.

Brian,
I have never cut "T" slots for my extention tables. I just cut a dado a bit deeper than that on the saw table, and wide enought for the washer on the end of the miter guage. The washer on the end of your guage only needs to engage toward the front of your saw's table to do it's work.
Hope you like your new saw!

Hi Jerry, Thanks for your reply. I'm feeling a bit dumb right now. Howie (above) said the same thing. outfeed slots are for clearence not support of the miter gauge. I'm learning.
Thx again, Brian
Oh, and I love the PM2000. Had a Craftsman contractors saw which served well for 10 years but I didn't know what I was missing.

Leave a space between the pieces for the surface.
Hi, Thanks for your reply but I don't understand. "Pieces" meaning table saw and outfeed table? Which surface? Sorry.
Brian
The slots on an outfeed table are sized for clearance, not for support. Make them however wide you need to have lots of clearence side to side and underneath. You don't want the miter bar to hang up on the outfeed table.
Now that makes sense. It also makes life a bit easier. Thanks Howie.

I just cut a wider / deeper slot, because there's no reason to use the miter slide anything beyond where the bar passes the blade.
Thanks, I'm feeling a bit dumb. Not unusual. Brian
