I've seen several posts from people who have bought it and love it. It was my planer of choice until the jointer bit off some of the budget, so I settled for the 1-speed. I doubt you could go wrong with it. Was amused to see that Home Depot does not carry the 2-speed, probably because it's so close in price to the Rigid planer, but has leap-frogged it in capability.
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I have the 22-580 for about 5 months and it has performed admirably. I've gotten good results planing maple, beech, walnut, poplar, purpleheart, pine, and douglas fir using just the regular speed. I only switch to the finishing speed about 10% of the time, when I am planing curly maple or woods with irregular grain. I take off very little each pass (1/32" or less) and dampen the wood beforehand, and tearout is minimal, but existent. Snipe control is pretty good, although I notice snipe more often when planing shorter boards (18" or less). The only thing I can knock is that the infeed table got scratched and the chrome finish is peeling off. It's purely cosmetic, but annoying nonetheless.
I have one, and id buy another if something happened to the one i have. Changing the knives are easy. They are two sided HSS knives that sell for about $35US i think.
Only drawback, as with all portable (though the weight makes you think portable for someone like The Hulk) planers is the noise. Its a universal motor and its noisy. The two speed feature is based on feed speed, not actual knife RPM. Only when i plane something like pine do i really have to worry about clogging, but if you have a good dust collection that has lots of "suck" it should handle it just fine. (i think the dust collection hood is extra or some places have it included)
