I redid a commercial finish done by another shop as it was scratching. They used Sherwin Wms cab acrylic. I talked to S&W tech and they said that catalized vinyl sealer and catalized Kemvar might work but wouldn’t guarentee.Told customer wouldn’t guarentee but cust agreed to restrictions.Finish is still scratching, any suggestions other than strip and finish which is our next solution. Also, any suggestions on top finish in office setting with daily usage. Thanks

I'm not getting something here. Did you recoat the CAB with Kemvar??
Catalyzed varnish is one of the most scratch resistant finishes available, though two component poly would be slightly better.
Need more details ---
Whats the wood???
JJ
*I scuff sanded the surface. I coated over CAB with 1 coat S&W vinyl sealer w catalizer and 2 coats S&W Kemvar w catalizer. Rubbed out the top and delivered it. Its two months later and the cust. says its scratching worse than the CAB. Probably should have stripped it,but time restraints , matching a custom stain which is stain used on all built-ins in a small room ,and cust cost kept me from insisting on not recoating but stripping and finishing. Wood is birch stained a red mahog. color.
*sounds like these people need plastic laminate.
*Provided theres no problems with the Kemvar adhering to the CAB, I don't know what to tell you. Finishes will scratch, however, some tough finishes are harder to scratch (like urethane)The Kemvar is about the toughest I know. Whats scratching this stuff anyways-- ???Maybe they need glass tops.Jeff Jewitt
*It's in a conference room and I assume the scratches are from clipboards, appointment books, etc. Its hard for me to know what,if anything,to do to solve their complaint.I use Kemvar regularly and have never had this complaint in 15 years.Talked to S&W tech and they say" maybe the CAB being much softer has something to do w. this. Valuable lesson"Don't recoat another shops mistake. Let them fix their own problems, no matter who begs that you get involved in another shops screw-ups.I would NEVER use CAB on a conference table unless the customer demanded it and they signed off on it after being made aware of its drawbacks. They should have had a polyester finish.
*Probably its from the metal bumpers on the bottom of briefcases.I'll vote for polyester as the toughest to scratch with the Kemvar being a close second.I'll also second the lesson learned. If performance of a finish is critical, it's best to start over. You cannot expect much putting a tough finish over a less durable one.Jeff
