I am hoping our down under friends can help I acquired some australian cypress and jarrah recently. The jarrah in particular is stunning (at 12 $US per BF, FYI). I’ve been staring at it for awhile without a specific project in mind. I am wondering what would be a suitable finish for this wood. I have tried my usual BLO and shellac on some scraps, but it seems like something’s missing. Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks and G’day

The red of Jarrah goes brown with exposure to light so an UV resistant finish will help there.
The cypress (love that smell!!) is oily so test for rejection with whatever you decide to use.
For the non-Oz here's what they look like

G'day Stan,
Cypress is mainly used for flooring here, very rot resistant - typically finished in tung oil or 2-pack polyurethane (brush-on)
Jarrah responds to any finish, but I use a penetrating oil followed by satin polyurethane if needed. Of course, acid catalysed lacquer also works well. Note Ian's comments on UV sensitivity also pls.

You can make almost anything from the Jarrah. Just watch the weight of the finished article!
Oh, and keep your tools sharp. As Splinte said in another thread ... Jarrah set new standards for hardness ...
Thanks Mates. It is good looking wood and the cypress has a great smell. They are both available here in the central US, being sold as flooring. I hope there is plenty in Australia because I didn't see that many trees when I was there.

No problems Stan,
Forgot to mention that the Cypress splits easily, need to predrill when nailing/screwing near ends.
Cheers,
