Guy in Silver Spring is giving away cherry on craigslist.
Says he just cut down 3 60′ trees: 18-24″ diameter.

Thanks for the heads-up, although I'm not in the DC area (not even close at 12 hours away). But, umm, do you have a link to the Craigslist advert? The link you posted was to a contact email. It would be nice to check out the actual ad for particulars.
Sorry. Thanks for letting me know.http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/zip/1032633714.html
Thanks for the info. I live just an hour away. I just e-mailed the guy saying I'd love to have them. I have a small portable saw-mill. Anybody in the area that wants some, can come and help (if he accepts my offer). It's a chain saw mill, but works good and fast.
I'll be there!

OK..I let you know as soon as I hear from him. Thanks , more hands make work easier. I figure with the mill we could slab it into say 4" thick x up to 16- 20" wide x 6-8' long pieces. The first slab cuts could be firewood or cute little benches. If he has 3 - 60' trees it might be a 2 day event. Of course we'll have to see if the 60' logs are all usable. I have seen cherry trees before and most are not that straight, maybe 10-12' sections, but I can cut bent sections with this rig of mine. We'll see. Do you have a truck and a chain saw? Bill D.
Chevy 3500 extended w/roof racks, 18" poulan, maul, come-alongs. You sound like you've done this, anything else we might need?My wish-list includes: 6'x 10" log and as much and as big wood as I can get. I can do 2 days. I live in Hyattsville. Silver Spring covers a large area going back to the original Post Office boundaries but it's got to be close.

habilis,
OOOHHHH..yes. Have done too many times, back hurts, knee goes out. But there's still more miles to go.
Sounds like you are well equipped also. My 1-ton just blew a piston awhile back. But I have a 3/4 ton and an 18' tag-a-long trailer to haul what ever you don't want so we can leave the guy a fairly clean site after. Did you want to load the 6'x10" log as 1 piece? If so I have some rigs to make it a little easier on the back. But with what he says he has, let's load several logs on your truck. Mom always told me not to be greedy."Greed" she used to say " is the root of many sins" she was right. But lets not count logs before they are cut. Hopefully I'll hear something soon. Right now I'm between jobs, so sooner would be better for me.
Yeah Billy, I'm looking for a whole log, wouldn't mind more.
I save $800-1000 if I make a mook for my wife. Never got around to making one for myself, so it'll be my gift to her ;-)

Also, To save time maybe we should stash some of what you want at my house for a week or two, got the space.
I don't want to be greedy either, but unless someone else is sounds like enough for all. And I think the guy will be happy to see it gone. I know I was when I gave away a trampoline and a freezer.
Bidding work now lots of odds and ends to keep me busy, but very flexible... uh, schedule that is I'm not talking about my body right now.
billy5151,
I'm starting to fear the guy with the cherry got an offer he couldn't refuse, since neither of us have heard from him.Btw, I'd like to hear more about your chainsaw mill. And I do have a 16" dia. log I need to get down to ####smooth 12" for my instructor.
And If you find some wood you need help with I will work for wood.
Sorry not to get back to you sooner. Yes, I guess the guy had a better offer, altho I send one more e-mail this morning. Still one can always hope. I had to go look at a timber frame this guy had stored in his back yard. Too bad he had stored improperly. 30-40% rot. It was (he says) a 2 story 30 x 40 frame. I told him that he might be able to selectively cut enough good out of what he has to maybe do a small single story 14-16 sq.
The Chain saw rig is just one of those Alaskan lumber making jigs that clamps to the bar (front & rear bolts) of the saw. I think I got it from Northern Hydraulics catalog. Runs about $1-200.00 bucks. I had to have a 40' x 8" x 8" long top plate for a restoration I was doing. None of the mills here could cut anything longer than 30' or so. It's the saw big enough to cut larger logs that runs into money. The saw that I use can rip a 24" dia. log no problem. But the saw set me back $1000.00. It's a Poulan Pro one of the yellow ones not the green ones. Before I bought it I debated with myself if it would work the way I wanted. Or would it sit in the corner of the shop, and I'd have to explain to people how I was foolish and wasted money. But it works great to make beams or slab logs for re-saw later. Chain saw mills are a waste for making lumber tho, takes out too much kerf. And you wind up losing every 3rd board. I think I have pics of us using it, if I do I'll post 'em.
Anyway keep ye fingers crossed, the guy may yet call.
Now I'm going to the shop. IT"S PLAY TIME!!!!

"If I can turn it into sawdust...I can handle it"
For Valentine's day my love and I spent the afternoon framing out and hanging the new(old) door to the shop. Used to be 30" wide, now it's 42.
Cut out the 12" thick concrete wall last weekend. These old houses are fun.
Heeeeyyyyy,,,,, Guess who called tonight............The guy with the cherry logs....Can ya imagine that. We can have them. Says he just wants a mantle piece or so. Says he lives in Colesville. And we should be able to get a truck/trailer close to them. Any way he's not in a great hurry.. but I need to coordinate some time to do this. How is your schedule. Next week is rough (but not out) for me. Maybe the week of the 23rd of Feb. Let me know
And 42" is a proper door.
Bill D.
Great!
Afternoon of 23rd I'm supposed to meet an inspector at our rental prop.
Can change if need be. Flexible otherwise. Be easiest for me to firm up the date(s), so I can work around it.
Colesville looks ~ 20-25 min.
Hello, I live in Arlington, Virginia. I do not have a sawmill or other equipment, but I could lend a hand in exchange for some wood. Thanks, Ken Rosenberg 703-307-6725
billy5151 has the sawmill and the guy with the wood called him back not me, so Bill's calling the shots.Pete
Pete
Thanks for putting me in charge....oh boy!?!?!. I 'll e-mail you with the particulars as soon as I find out.
Well Bill, like I said you've got the sawmill and the guy called you, besides the experience. Feel free to delegate or even abdicate as you see fit. A lot of people want to be boss. You don't = good fit.
I await your orders sir! Sorry, couldn't resist.Pete
Kingmaker, hmm I wonder if there's any money in that?

Pete,
I should get a pic of the area and the logs tonight. And.....we'll see. If I figure it out I'll try to post it. And I talked to him again today seems like a good guy. If you have a meeting on the 23rd, I'd say go ahead. It looks as tho I will be busy on the 23rd also. So tentatively let's say 24th or 25. I'm going to allow 2 days to cut/clean up. Hopefully there's room to leave my trailer there and won't have to yank it back and forth. I'll give Ken a call also or a post to him.
Those are the orders to date!!
Bill D.
"If I can turn it into sawdust...I can handle it"
Pete,
Here are ( I hope ) the pics of the cherry. Not to straight as I figured cherry to be. Looks as tho there might be a few 6'-8' sections. Looks also that there might be some fire wood. OK I just tried to "cut & paste" and it would not work. So I will try to forward his e-mail to you. Let me know if you get them.
Bill
Bill,
got the pics. Looks like we should get a nice little bit to work with and I need to start re-stocking firewood any way.

Gents, I am still interested in helping with this project. I have never used a chainsaw, but if I can be of assistance, I will gladly help. If no help is needed, I could pay for some cherry.
Thanks, Ken
Ken,
If you haven't got any experience with a chainsaw this is not the time to learn. First is safety, as Bill said we don't want too many people running around with chainsaws - I have a VERY deep respect for what they can do and will make sure I know what's happening with any in the area and especially the one in my hands. Second is time, while being safe we will be trying to maintain a steady efficient pace. Which brings
us back to safety, you don't want to learn to handle a chainsaw in a hurry, under pressure. As far as how else you might help, let's wait till we hear from Bill.Pete

Hi Pete, I agree, I'm just offering to help out with carrying the wood or whatever else might be if needed. Look forward to hearing what the plan will be.
Thanks, Ken
Pete, & Ken
I'm Here,, just got side tracked with a job proposal I'm trying to "iron out". The guy keeps changing his mind.
Pete,
I'll call on Sun after Church and fill in the details, but as it stands I may/not bring the trailer to the site. I have to fix a few things first to be safe with it. If I don't bring it ...It's just more for you and Ken. And ,yes It will be Tues. I'll try to be there around 9:00-ish-- With everything going on I just can't be there earlier. I'll probably just bring my truck and equip.
Ken.
You are welcome to come and help. You can certainly be of great help holding ,positioning , carrying etc. AND learn a few things in the process. I have done many cuts with a chain saw , felling ,cutting, ripping, carving , it's all dangerous. Anytime you have sharp teeth at 3000+ rpm. LOOK OUT !! But at the same time it's useful to know how and where to cut on a log to prevent kick-back & binding. So please come along and join the "fun". I will call on Sun after Church.
To you both,,,, just a reminder that I have a chain-saw mill...... cuts good... but not for making lumber. Takes TOO much kerf out and loose too much wood. But we can slab and you can re-saw later. I find this works well to let the wood dry (stabilize) a bit before resaw. Bring gloves etc. I will as per my usual bring my own lunch, take my 1/2 hr and " get back to it" And bring yer own music. I listen to just about anything EXCEPT pure jazz. LOVE Cajun and bluegrass & blues.
I'll talk to you both soon.
Bill D.
Bill,
Last job I looked at the guy had no clue as to what he wanted. I politely gave him some things to think about and homework. If I hear from him in six months I'll be amazed.
Plan sounds good and I like your choice of music. Can't handle rap/hip-hop. Heard all my music too many times.Pete
Gents, sorry, I will not be able to participate, I have work obligations on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you end up with some clear cherry boards I can sticker and dry, relatively free of sapwood, I would be interested in buying some.
Thanks, Ken
Bill,
I'll be there.Pete

Ken,
Sorry you can't make it . I'll take pics and post some, so everyone can see the fun. That is if I can work the camera and figure out how to post the pics.
Bill

Ken ,
Hi , Sure it's OK by me. Altho I don't want too many people there. Not because of greed, but you get too many people with chain saws in their hands and thing can get kinda scarry. Plus I don't yet know how much room he has. I'm going to call him tomorrow and see if he can e-mail a pic of the area, so we know what's what. I'll keep ya" posted" ( heh, heh)

"if I can turn it into sawdust......I can handle it.
With extreme jealousey, Good find, have fun, be safe.
Being safe is the priority, like I said before I don't mind sharing. But when you get more than 2-3 people with chain saws things get tricky. And Thanks to Pete who found it.

Well, I'm glad he didn't do like a friend of mine. He needed some front yard so bought from a neighbor who was about to sell her house too. It had these great big eighty foot walnut trees that spewed walnuts all over the place and weren't very pretty. Most of them didn't have a branch for forty feet. In short, he sawed them down and gave them to another neighbor who burned them in his fire place. Got a lot of heat out of those walnut logs. And I was sick.
