Hi All,
I just moved to the Atlanta area(Alpharetta to be exact) and I don’t know where to start in finding good lumber sources. So.. I’m thinking about building a skin on frame kayak or canoe, so I’m looking for some green or air-dried lumber for the boat( I’m guessing spruce, fir, or pine and probably a little ash)… I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks

Call Suwanee Lumber in beautiful, downtown Suwanee or Peachtree Lumber up in Kennesaw. They are both excellent suppliers even though I am not aware if they carry air-dry. Perhaps they can direct you to a source.
There are several small mills from Blairsville over to Blue Ridge I believe. Most are up in the North Georgia mountains (Blue Ridge is part of the Appalachian chain. I have seen a few post their location, but not aware. Perhaps someone reading may know a few of those sources.
Good luck and welcome to Atlanta...
Sarge in Lawrenceville..
Thanks Sarge, I'll have to check out Suwanee and Peachtree. Have you ever heard of Anderson Sawmill in Cumming? I got a tip from an employee at the Woodcraft in Roswell to check them out for rough-cut local species.
I am aware there is (or was?) a guy up in Cumming that had a portable mill. I don't remember his name, but it could have been Anderson? Then again it might not be the same guy at all.
I would just give him and call and see what he does and what he has. Depending on where in Cummings and where you are in Alpharetta.. really not that far. When I was growing up in the 50's - 60's in Gwinnett Co. ... if you said Cumming or Alpharetta, you were speaking of the old towns. Now that means within 20 mile radius of the old towns in the present day sense. Things have changed... :>)

Ha! I see what you mean, I'm off exit 11 of 400, and Alpharetta's downtown is about a 15 minute drive from here... It's very strange to see these quaint farm houses and small town downtowns next to highrise business complexes and McMansioins in the midst of this massive urban sprawl.... Much different from my North Mississippi hometown.

Again.. much different than the 50's and 60's when they were on the tail end of being county counties outside Atlanta. If you went 12-15 miles from downtown Atlanta in those days... you were in the country. Not anymore as you can see. :>)
Have heard of Atlanta Hardwoods btw.. but have never used them as I heard they are a bit high? Suwanee is probably the cheapest but Peachtree in Kennesaw does have a large range of exotics. There is a place close to Ga. Tech that carries very exotics from all over the world.. and they are priced as if they were exotics from all over the world. Great stuff.. but very expensive.
Regards and if ya need something.. give me a shout!

You might try Atlanta Hardwoods (I think they go by Hardwoods, Inc). They are located northeast Atlanta right off 285.
Is that the place in Mableton?
Yep. One nice thing about them is you can go pull your choice of wood/plywood/veneer, etc and if it is over $250 or so (which doesn't amount to much these days) they will deliver the load for $7. I work in Atlanta but live down in LaGrange (80 miles), so I swing over pick out my stuff and they bring it down to LaGrange on Friday. Saves me having to tow a trailer to Atlanta.
I'm off of exit 11 also. There is a guy in Gainsville that has his own little sawmill. the buisness is called Cag Lumber. He carrys air dried lumber. Atlanta hardwoods is way over priced. But they do have a large selection of wood. I like suwanee lumber but their wood is not air dried.
Brandon
Thanks Brandon, I'm gonna try to head up to Suwanee this weekend.
Suwanee is open 8 AM till 4 PM weekdays... and from 8 AM till I believe 1 PM on Saturdays. Check thier web or call as they do close early on Saturdays. I believe that is true of Peachtree in Kennesaw also?
I may be up there also as I just finished a project and will start another most likely on Monday. Depends on what comes up I suppose?
