Occasionally you run out of a product or you’re looking for an alternative to save money. Manufacturer’s can bottle products that are available to us – but at a higher cost in their packaging. Please share your finishing tricks of the trade. What alternatives have worked for you that can be passed along to the rest of us?
I’ve used Shellac for padding when out of padding lacquer (some may say I have it backwards) paint thinner for mineral spirits, naphtha for leveling shellac sticks, – vinegar or borax instead of neutralizer after bleaching. Haven’t used my Scotch to make gilding liquor. Some note MEK to assist in thinning lacquer. I never used a furniture wash after paint remover, – instead thinners and soap + water. Bondo instead of wood puttys etc………
Any suggestions for an accelerator for cyanocrylate, or a retarder for Solar-lux?

>>paint thinner for mineral spirits
Paint thinner is mineral spirits. It just costs more when they call it "paint thinner".
Make your own Watco, Tung Oil Finish, etc by mixing 1/3 varnish, 1/3 boiled linseed oil and 1/3 mineral spirits.
Make your own Formbys or any "wiping varnish" by mixing varnish and mineral spirits in a 50/50 ratio.
