   My hot-rod varnish should be able to be colored using oil-based tints or universal tint colorants, although I have not tried doing so. Before using the tinted varnish on a valued piece it would be a good idea to try a test run of the varnish to make sure the tint has not altered the drying characteristics of the finish.

    

   Using a tinted varnish is not an easy task, especially when multiple coats of finish are required. Tinted varnish must be applied very evenly or dark streaks will result from excess finish build up and thus a higher concentration of color in those areas. I think a better result would be achieved by trying to arrive at the desired color, using a stain or dye, before applying the finish. Applying the color separate from the finish will give you more control over the color and the uniformity of the color.

    

   There is no substitute for experience when it comes to finishing so try a few test runs before committing color and finish to a valuable project.
