Tapered Sliding Dovetails
Router jig and masking-tape shim make for easy fit
The sliding dovetail is a strong, attractive joint in a carcase, and it’s easy to make with a router. In this concise article, Brian Donnelly explains how to cut sliding dovetails and how to prevent binding when using wide boards of dense hardwood. He tapers one side of both the male and female sections so the joint is loose until the final inch or so. Drawings illustrate the steps involved in the job.
