Editor's Review: 10-in. Sliding Compound Miter Saws

by Andy Beasley

review date: August 10, 2006

This is a good saw with some drawbacks. The trigger lock is best used with the right thumb, so left-handed operation is, well, unhandy; the rear blade guard must be adjusted rearward when mitering and it can strike the fences during some compound cuts; the tiny right fence isn’t too helpful, but the excellent left-side fence smoothly flips out of the way for bevels. The miter and bevel scales are cluttered but very precise.

My saw has been excellent - accurate - I make furniture with it and have not had any issues - wish the right fence was better but even that hasn't caused issues. I use a Forrest chop saw blade which may help... I also bought the portable stand which is always up in the shop and easy to transport when I'm on work sites - it is sold and performs well

After reading countless positive reviews I finally coerced my employer to purchase one. out of the box it was junk from the start. the miter settings had no way to adjust them without throwing out the 90 degree the bevel settings were never accurate without making several test cuts to dial it in and the swivel mechanism had so much slop in it you could literally grab it by the front knob and pick it up by a full 1/8th inch it should have gone back to the store immediately and gotten something else. Being in the carpentry profession for 15+ yrs I have used them all and this is definately the worst sliding miter saw I have ever used. the 150.00 harbor freight model is more accurate and seems to be built better.

I have not had any problems with guards needing to be moved except if you want to minimize tearout then you need to reset the blade guards on the stand. Saw was very accurate and I did make minor adjustments to the angle scales as described in the manual. I really like the depth of cut adjustment which works great. No regrets for the purchase.

This saw could be one of the best if Hitachi moved the detents out from under the turntable, thereby allowing them to be more easily cleaned. As it is one must break down the entire saw to clean, then resetting the fences is difficult at best and no fine tuning capability for precise alignment. Would not recommend this saw.

Accuracy is poor unlike the review states. There is no way to fine adjust the fence and tilt preset settings. Besides that it's a fine tool, easy to operate and smooth. If you are doing rough carpentry it's fine. For ultra precision work, not recommended.
