Editor's Review: Benchtop Mortisers

by Roland Johnson

review date: August 1, 2005

Properly set up and operated, a mortising machine cuts straight, square-sided mortises in relatively short order. The author had eight benchtop models shipped to his shop for a close examination. The Fisch has a microadjustable fence; an upper-limit stop on the support column; and a spring-loaded cogged lever that took two hands to operate.

I have one of these that I bot b/c it was less expensive. As always, there is a price to pay! Fence is mediocre at best. The lock downs are poorly cast and many have broken already. You will need to adjust with a backer board with each cut which further limits stock size. It will cut true if you spend a lot of time to set up but i'm not too impressed overall. I am looking at a Steel City unit now to replace this one.
