Editor's Review: Tool Test: Trim Routers

by Gregory Paolini

review date: June 2, 2011

I tested this router with two bases. One held it vertically, but in that configuration, the bit is completely hidden by the base and it was not easy to hold in one hand. Those are serious problems for a furniture maker. The second base holds it horizontally, which turned it into the best tool I have ever used for trimming edgebanding flush.

Good idea but poor execution. And for what you get, it's VERY expensive. It's almost impossible to find a router bit anywhere that fits in this machine when it's used with the horizontal base. Festool makes the only bit I've been able to find, but this has an 8 mm shaft which requires a different collett to the one supplied with the machine here in Australia. Forget about using any trim or template router bits (besides the 6 mm (1/4 inch) mortising bit because they won't fit. Dust extraction is good, but comes at the cost of visibility. All in all, the most disappointing Festool product I have used.
