Editor's Review: 8-in. Jointers Under $1,400

by William Duckworth

review date: December 1, 2005

The author selected 11 commonly available 8-in. jointers ranging in price from $650 to $1,350, all with either a 1-1/2-hp or 2-hp motor, and evaluated the beds, tables, fences, knives, and ease of making adjustments for each. The Delta 37-680 jointer has the longest bed of those tested and an extra long infeed table. Table adjustments are made with a lever, and the table-lock lever is sturdy and comfortable. This was the only model tested that incorporates a parallelogram design to minimize splintering. When you lower the table, it follows the radius of the cutterhead, so the gaps never changes. Finally, the fence-locking mechanism is on top of the machine rather than in back where it could slip.

Mine is actually the DJ-20, but looks very similar. It has plenty of power, and a soft starting motor. It gently whirrs to life and joints my lumber flat and square. The extra length on the infeed table is helpful to straighten bowed lumber. It had no trouble face jointing 8" wide white oak. The switch is well placed and easy to reach. The knives are pretty easy to set. If I adjusted the angle of the fence much, I might complain that the mechanism is a little clunky, but I leave it at 90 degrees almost all the time. I added a piece of Slick Tape under the fence tab, which makes the fence slide more smoothly on the table. A nice tool that I really enjoy using.

I shopped all the brands and made the same choice as FWW. What a fabulous tool this is. Powerful, sturdy, beautifully machined. It is a pleasure to use.The only thing I find less that perfect is the dust collection housing. The dust is supposed to travel down an open-topped chute to the waiting hose connection. Too much dust was escaping, so I had to jury-rig a cover for the chute, which now works well. I hope you are listening, Delta. Of course, as it only took a half hour or so to fix, what's to complain about? The inside color of the ashtray in a Silver Cloud?Great piece, Delta.
