Delta has added a new player to its dust-collection roster. It gets you plenty of power in a lightweight, compact, easy-to-roll-around package. It also has a 1-micron bag, better than the 5-micron or 30-micron bags found on many other collectors.

Model 50-720 features a 1-hp, 10.8-amp induction motor that, according to Delta, moves air at the rate of 650 cubic feet per minute (cfm) at the collector port. This places the machine between a shop vacuum and the standard 1-1/2 hp collectors reviewed in FWW #183. This model's capacity is enough to move dust and chips into the collector as long as you keep the hose length to under about 10 ft. (it comes with a 5-ft. hose) and connect the dust collector to only one dust-producing machine at a time. I hooked it up to a 13-in. planer, and it collected over 95% of the chips.

The Delta 50-720 sells for around $300. For more details, go to www.deltaportercable.com.

Great performance for an entry-level dust collector at a modest price. I paid $225 at Lowes - it was marked-down. If I had to pay the the full SRP of $300, I would have stepped up to a 1 1/2 hp at 1300 CFM DC from Grizzly ($324 delivered). What motivated me to buy this DC was price. Up until a month ago, I was thinking since I work out of my garage, I didn't need a dust collector. Boy was I wrong. I was using my shop vacuum hooked to my equipment and it caught about 75% of the dust. I was used to sweeping sawdust at the end of the day - a good 30 minutes. But after reading the review in Fine Woodworking, I started looking for a DC that fit my needs. I just wheel this DC to each machine before I use it and it captures about 99% of the dust. Virtually no saw dust on the floor. Now my cleanup time is about 5 minutes. Working out of my garage, this DC is perfect. Since I don't have the space to run hoses, a more powerful DC could be an overkill. My only regret is not buying one sooner.

The machine works well. Just wish the hose was a little longer.

I have been using this DC for about a year and have had no comlaints. Since i dont have a central system this is my shop DC. The only thing i have changed is that i replaced the 5ft hose with a 10 ft one as well as taken the baffel out of the intake which restricted shavings from my delta x 15 inch planer. once i took out the baffle it works like a champ.
