Since the beginning of cordless time, manufacturers gradually have been building bigger and more powerful drill/drivers. Early versions of the species boasted 9.6v. Now, some models have evolved into 36v titans. But extra power also means added size and weight, and that can be a disadvantage for furniture makers. A small, lightweight drill/driver is perfect for reaching inside a cabinet to install hardware. It also works fine for general construction at the workbench.

That’s why the new Bosch PS40-2 impact driver caught my eye. It measures just 6-1/2 in. long by 6 in. tall and weighs less than 2-1/4 lb. A 10.8v lithium-ion battery, combined with the impact function, provided plenty of power for furniture- and jig-making. It easily drives long or thick screws and is sensitive enough for smaller ones. A variable-speed motor and a sensitive trigger mean you’re less likely to overdrive screws.

The smallish battery provided plenty of power and held a charge surprisingly well. And the PS40-2 fit comfortably in the pocket of my shop apron. This is a great little tool that could be my primary drill/driver. Its $190 street price includes two batteries and a 30-minute charger. Go to www.boschtools.com; 877-267-2499.

Try Bosch's 10.8V angle drill ...... it's even better! These things' batteries last amazingly long; and, are as strong as a Panasonic 15.6V drill for most applications.

I've owned the Bosch Cordless Screwdriver PS20 for over a year and purchased the PS40 two weeks ago. They complement each other very well. Battery interchangeability is a big plus. While the PS20 sports a single LED, the PS40 has three arranged around the 1/4" quick exchange chuck which provides much better illumination on the workpiece. All in all, a very nicely designed tool. By the way, the reviewer (Roland Johnson) sometimes refers to the PS40 as a drill/driver. The Bosch owners manual states that the PS40 is to be used only as a driver, not as a drill. The PS20 handles some of my drilling tasks. My other drill/driver is a Festool C12 3 amp hour NMh which is probably the tool I reach for most often in the shop or job site. For driving fasteners, however, the PS40 is great.
