Editor's Review: Tool Test: Trim Routers

by Roland Johnson

review date: September 25, 2012

The Bosch Colt is a great little router—tough, simple, and affordable. Now it’s even more versatile, with the introduction of a plunge base that turns the Colt into an accurate, easy-to-use plunge router.

The base has seven turret stops with two that are microadjustable, an easy-to-read depth scale, and a microadjust extension on the plunge stop rod. All of that adds up to the ability to quickly set accurate plunge depth for any length or style of router bit. The well-placed plunge release lever is large and comfortable to use, and provides smooth action. The base handles are nicely sized with a soft-grip textured surface, and they’re angled forward in a comfortable position. The base also accommodates a router edge guide.

The view under the router is good, way better than with the stock square base, with a great sightline to make inlay work or any fussy bit placement a walk in the park. And it’s super easy to insert and remove the router from the base.

I’ve used the router base for a couple of weeks now and can’t find a drawback. It’s simple and accurate and makes the Colt easier to use for inlay work, hinge mortises, and edge-profiling.

Bosch representatives say the base will be available in October. A combination kit (model PR20EVSPK), which includes the motor, fixed and plunge bases, an edge guide, and case, also will be sold for about $200.
