Woodworker: Tyler Stokes
Fine Woodworking Award for Furniture Design Stokes had a small piece of cherry with a nice flow to the grain. Because he enjoys simple and practical pieces, he decided to use the piece for this two-drawer cherry jewelry chest (8 in. deep by 12 in. wide by 7 in. tall) with ebony knobs and maple drawer boxes. Stokes turned the knobs on a drill press and finished the piece with three coats of shellac on the outside and a final wax coat inside and out.
The Design in Wood exhibition, presented by the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association and the San Diego County Fair, is held every June and July. With more than 350 entries, it is the biggest show we know of and the talent is superb. This piece is a winner from the 32nd show.
