These two Newport Chippendale Corner chairs or “roundabout chairs” are based on a few different examples of chairs made by John Goddard in the later half of the 18th century. Made of solid mahogany, only the back two aprons are straight without curves or shapes. Made with pinned mortise and tenon joinery, these chairs have ball and claw feet, pad feet, serpentine shaped back splats, and serpentine shaped front aprons. All the profiles on this chair are hand carved and hand shaped to closely match original profiles. One chair has ball and claw feet with a carved knuckle on the arm rail, original examples of these chairs sold at Sotheby’s in 2005 for 1.5 million and another example is at the Rhode Island Historical Society. The other chair has a simpler curved arm with pad feet, an original example of this style is at the Shelburne Museum in VT. I finished these chairs with oil, shellac and wax. The seats are upholstered in Italian Leather by our friend Gay Freeborn.
