Ash & Walnut Jewelry Chest
This jewelry chest is made of ash and walnut with bloodwood handles for the seven interior trays. The case and the trays are lined with dark-brown suede cloth. The chest sits within a though-tenoned frame-and-leg platform. The top is also through-tenoned. I used oil finish on the case and trays and lacquer finish on each of the tray handles. The panel for the top is a bookmatched piece from the same board as the chest.
I usually insert a suede cloth panel on the interior of a chest lid. In this case, I thought the exposed bookmatched grain was attractive and gave the piece a lighter feeling when the lid was open. The lid is mounted with Brusso stop hinges.
Each of the seven trays has a handle made of bloodwood and finished with polished lacquer. The trays rest on runners within the chest.
The side, front, rear, and lid panel are matched for grain pattern and are cut from the same piece of ash. The end rails of the walnut lid are hollow planed to add "lift" to the piece.
This detail photograph shows the through tenons on both the lid and the legs. It also shows the continuity of the grain around the corners of the chest.
