I have been working with wood since about 1981, first restoring antique furniture which lead to apprenticing as a joiner. Then from there I went on to restoring (not remodeling) heritage homes, all which I still do .Other things, or some things I have done since are building all furnishing for many high end restaraunts /and pubs,restoring/rebuilding 3 woody wagons.I was filmed building a reproduction of the ark of the covent for Bluebook films(the ark revealed )is the name of the film .I am now hoping to finally make the move to doing mostlly gallery work.I have been self employed for the last 12. years ,strictlly by word of mouth so I think its time.

Re: walnut and maple desk

Oh, I likely should mention that the walnut portion of the base was a huge slabe cut from the base of the tree where it was coming up from the ground formimg a giant Y. I cut it in half and fliped them side to side, there are two walnut cleats about 4" wide that are dovetailed into each side with widened slotes to srew the top in place, allowing for movement. The figured maple foot rest is mortised 3/4 of the thickness of the walnut slabes(2.25"),and all the joinery was done by hand. The desk was sprayed with 6 coats of Varethane professinal urethane(semi gloss).Lastly the top is 7' long and 28" at its widest point.

Re: Once was a dance hall

stevegiamundo, thanx,Effort would be dead on,and the cleint was made well awhere that this piece (for sake of a better word) would reqiure up keep. I checck on it every year, and coat it as needed,he keeps it clean and we have become close friends as a result. as for the latest edtion of FW,Ikeep hearing of it but have yet to see it in my mail box.Perhaps we in western Canada are among the last to receive it? I am very pleased you like it ,and incase you are wondering ,when I say (I)built this from lumber reclaimed from an old dance hall ,I mean just that! Hence the effort statment.

Re: Took A Hit

All I can think of is WOW! love the back ground in the mirror

Re: 2900 lb free standing stairs

GEide Thank you so much for your compliment ,yes I do have other pics of this and other house projects maybe I will do just that .the funny thing about this project is that I don't like substates at all ,so this one was a challenge for me. but the carpenters who called me in for this job where going to just bolt steel plates under the treads.so I gave the client this option and he loved it ,but I could not talk him into using the 100year old reclaimed timbers I have.all the same I'm happy with it to .Thanks again

Re: The gloved woodworker

I had to rub my eyes when I saw gloves on ajointer.25 years ago in high school I had the wonderful(not at all!)task of cleaning about half of 4 fingers(from the nuckles)on the left hand of a class mate wearing gloves, even though he was told not to every day.Over the years since I have let a few workers go because of them insisting on wearing gloves on machines.I would urge beginners to not wear gloves on any machine no matter how thin they are!
