Re: Q&A with Period Furniture Maker Philip C. Lowe

rich 99:

Dust is an artifact, also a pain in the buttocks (this is a family site). But a dirty messy shop is not indicative of any virtue in the craftsman. Only questions about time management.

One of the great lessons taught at North Bennet and other crafts schools: stop work when things are going well, clean up for the day. You will literally leap out of bed the next day to get into the shop to get back to work. Often, the finest results are achieved by attempting to achieve no results at all. Not sure if Phil hews to this Zenny wisdom, but his results are incomparable and worthy of emulation.

Re: The Wedge

Gary, aka the Zen Rogomeister, is a great soul. When I see one of his pieces, I always stop whatever I'm doing, shut down machines, and lock the doors until I've read and appreciated what he has to say and teach. If I lived anywhere near his NWS, I'd be there in a heartbeat. He is a man talking to his fellow men and women of the wood. I've adopted many of his time-tested stratagems, such as warming up with little choppin' and cuttin' exercises before launching into that walnut and tiger maple lifetime achievement.

There is no success like failure, and I am so glad he wrote and lives this. Thank you, mwalimu.

Dust collection....dust collection...dust collection. Stop adding tools and machines, and address the dust and unseen hazards!

Re: How to Repair a Botched Hinge Installation

Self-centering bits...why didn't an editor "revise" Mr. Dunton's well-intended fix? Plugging holes...we all have done this, and no shame! But I count on FWW editors knowing MORE than I do! Sheesh!
