Re: UPDATE: Book Giveaway: Traditional Projects from the New Best of Fine Woodworking

looks like some nice projects book

Re: IWF Alert: Fine Woodworking interviews Tommy MacDonald

def looking forward to this!

Re: Sculpting A Chair Seat

very cool! simple and effective.

Re: Trying on a Different Look

Another thing about layers is that when you are sitting with a client browsing through the model showing it off or modeling particular parts, it is much simpler and faster to turn off layered external geometry (cabinets) to show inner geometry (drawers) with a single click, as opposed to selecting geometry and hide it only to later unhide it manually.

Re: A Decorative Carved Fan in SketchUp

tenbears - what do you mean reinstalled extensions.rb?

extensions.rb is part of SketchUp (free/pro) and is located in the su/tools and NOT su/Plugins directory - there is never a need to reinstall extensions.rb

Do you happen to have extensions.rb in your /plugins directory? if so, this may cause some unplanned issues/crashes with SU.

make sure you have extensions.rb in:
/Library/Application Support/Google Sketchup 7/Sketchup/tools/ (where is SHOULD be). and delete extensions.rb from your /plugins folder (or move it to your desktop to test and make sure SU works well)

Re: Quick and Easy Mortises and Tenons

Thanks for the post! I'll get to work on this and figure out why this is happening. I'll post and send out updates when it's resolved.

As a side note I would like to mention that metric units put in explicitly (ex. 10mm) does work. It's the referenced measurements that don't seem to function as expected when working in metric.

Re: Emma Frid 1918 - 2010

RIP.

It was indeed a great contribution to get Tage Frid to write all those articles and books that will forever live amongst us and be referenced to.

Re: The Blacker House Chair Leg Detail

so simple and very cool! I use a very similar technique when doing tapered curved legs on more than 1 side. pull out the shape, then move it inwards, intersect and cut the reminders.

Re: How to Use Bamboo for Fine Furniture

would love to use this material for certain applications, but for a renewable material, the cost is ridiculously high, so can't justify it. better stick to less renewable local species like maple and cherry.

Re: A Barley Twist in SketchUp

great tutorial! and a good set of plugins to help out with this, otherwise this is a daunting process.

Re: The Importance of the Mouse and Scroll Wheel

there are so many good options these days, but I agree with you on the extra functionality.

Either a scroll wheel, or a multi-touch (or multi gesture) track-pad, or a USB controller like the shuttle-pro and similar products.

I don't have a scroll wheel mouse as I use a tablet, but once in a while I get to work on my laptop with a multi-touch pad, and going back to a computer without it feels like downgrading.

Re: Drawing Dovetails With a New Plugin

Dave, Thanks for the plug.

As for the plugin - it may not be for everyone. the set price is set in comparison to other plugins in the market that cost more and do less. there is quite a bit of complexity in this plugin. not to say that it cannot be improved. there are already several ideas to push it into more capabilities such as variable spacing, multiple saved presets etc. but thats the nature of the beast. you have to start somewhere. and as much as I can be objective, I think it's a good start.

for a person that designs to the joinery level of detail, this plugin seriously speeds up the process and does have a good return on value. If one does not go down to the joinery level in the design process, than it is correct to assume that the plugin may not be suitable for that person.

Always glad to hear comments and ideas though. keep them coming.

Re: UPDATED: Giveaway and Poll: The Most Requested Woodworking Gifts of 2009

Incra positioner would be nice, and the Laguna driftmaster

Re: UPDATED: What Tools Are on Your Holiday Wish List?

LV/Veritas low angle Jack Plane
Woodpecker PRL2 router lift /or/ Triton 3 1/4hp router
Incra LS/TS 17" router fence

Re: Free Handplane Book Download for Online Members

same problem here. can't fine the link anymore. was the PDF taken off? is it no longer available?

Re: Adding Details

Thanks Dave, this is a great method of simplifying things.

what gauges do you use for the turnings? ;o)

you mentioned "welding edges" (before running follow me) - what exactly is that? I don't remember running into this in sketchup as of yet.

Re: Sharpening 101: A Lesson in Cutting the Cheese?

Indeed Gary is one of the more entertaining teachers to watch, which makes picking up new techniques easier and faster.

thanks gary - that was the last nudge I needed to go and get a wet sharpener after years of using the scary-sharp method with a jig. now I can touch up free-hand - what a time saver.

Is that cheese A2 or O1 ?

Re: Easy-to-install spiral cutterheads for $250

Thanks for the headsup Asa, for those of us that can't be there. This is good news. hope they prove themselves and the new product. this could be a good upgrade to many woodworkers out there.

Re: DeWalt's compact 18-volt batteries fit old and new tools

now if only those batteries didn't require a mortgage - I wouldn't have sold my collection (10) of dewalt 18v tools... gotta hand it to Ridgid - batteries for LIFE.
